English 103: Writing Portfolio

Portfolios work in different ways in different instances.  Sometimes they are used to simply collect work a student has completed over a period of time.  While other times they are used to mark progress via revision.  Occasionally they are used as a way to assess student work-not simply just writing but also progress and effort in class.

My web portfolio will do all of the above.  As my portfolio develops I will engage in three activities: collection, selection, and reflection.  This will give me the opportunity to review my work, revise my writing, and think about what I have learned throughout the semester.  I will showcase my progress throughout the semester through revision of my previous work, which will be displayed in this portfolio.  Another way I will show the knowledge I have gained about my writing is in a reflective introduction for my portfolio.

The contents of my web portfolio will consist of the following: a biography, two introductions, blog posts, in-class writings, my visual literacy narrative project, my definition essay, my meaning essay, and my movie review project.  The biography is a quick message for my viewers to get to know more about me.  The introductions will tell why I selected each specific piece to be apart of my portfolio, and will discuss how I’m becoming a better writer.  The blog posts are based off of the reading that I have to do for this class.  The in-class writings are answers to the questions our professor gives us to type about on discussion board.  My visual literacy narrative is a video and explanation that depicts an important literacy moment in my life.  My definition essay argues the commonly known definition of an abstract word.  My meaning essay is an analysis of the different layers that make up a commercial.  My movie review project consists of an analysis of three professional reviews, as well as a review that I wrote myself.
